TRANSFORMATION URBAN DESIGN I 2025 I Heusenstamm

CLIENT: Stadt Heusenstamm

TEAM: Ina-Marie Kapitola,
COOPERATION: rheinflügel severin, mesh Landschaftsarchitekten

PROGRAMME: Mixed Use Urban Quarter
STATUS: open competition

Heusenstamm im Wandel - Vom Fernmeldeamt zur Nachbarschaft

The new quarter connects the surrounding residential areas and social infrastructure with the town center and railway station via a transformed former railway line that becomes a green park corridor. This linear open space functions as both a mobility route and a place to stay, while differentiated planting creates buffers to adjacent commercial uses.

The urban structure is defined by a permeable layout of shared courtyards that vary in size, orientation, and form, encouraging social interaction and diverse spatial experiences. Different housing types, tenures, and financing models are mixed within each courtyard to promote social inclusion. Community gardens and multiple building entrances support everyday neighborhood life.

At the center, a linear public square forms the urban heart of the quarter, activated by ground-floor uses such as small-scale businesses and community-oriented facilities. With buildings ranging from three to five storeys, the development achieves a balanced urban density and a distinct identity rooted in connectivity, diversity, and shared space.
