PTB INNOVATION CAMPUS BRAUNSCHWEIG

The design for the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) creates a clear center for the campus-like site. It proposes two distinct spatial characters: an urban, green boulevard in the south and a quiet forest park in the north. Transformation of the existing structures is a key focus—existing trees and buildings are largely preserved. The former casino is repurposed, while the adjacent open space is integrated into a larger public area. The new central space emerges as the most public part of the campus, framed by buildings such as the library, seminar and conference center, cafeteria, central building, and a small pavilion.
Implementation will take place in phases: First, the training center and the new central building will be constructed, followed by the cafeteria and the library. Afterward, the old library building will be demolished and replaced with a seminar and conference center. The traffic-calmed boulevard serves as the main circulation axis, promoting pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Expanded plazas with groves of flowering trees and seating areas enhance the quality of stay. The forest park retains its natural character and will be carefully developed with curved pathways, gathering spaces, and the removal of sealed surfaces. An open-air pavilion and a clearing with narrow paths create new opportunities for use and improve the site's connectivity.
