The research in Germany focused on a qualitative study of cooperative housing projects, as a source of information for future cooperative housing projects in the Netherlands. The purpose of the research was to identify key instruments in the process of planning and implementation of housing cooperatives, as well as their specific architectural designs.
The special focus of the research and interviews was on initiation narratives and forms of organization. The individual founding groups and their backgrounds were decisive for the overall structure of the projects and their legal form, which had a significant influence on the internal organization and financing. The complex procedure of financing took up a whole chapter of research. (We examined the equity rates, subsidies, and loans. The rates of cooperative entry and use related shares – resulting rents and possibilities of external subsidies.) Legal forms and organizational structures were summarized in diagrams and the projects and their structures were compared with each other. The architectural design and the added value of common spaces in addition to purely private space was another focus of the research. Specific spatial benefits were pointed out and looked at in detail.
